Tik Tok Review

I have decided to review the TikTok application. According to the Apple App Store, TikTok was reviewed by 17 million individuals (about the population of New York) who together gave an average star rating of 4.7 out of 5 stars, therefore I decided that it would be an excellent choice for further discussion, as it is highly known throughout the world.

What is TikTok?

Tik-Tok is a short-form video hosting service application for both mobile and computer enabled devices such as cell phones, tablets, smart televisions, video game systems, and nearly anything else that can download an application. TikTok is owned by a Chinese internet company called Byte Dance. Its main audience ranges from incredibly young youth to older aged adults and can be accessed from almost anywhere around the world. Additionally, TikTok allows users who have at least 1000 followers, the ability to go Live and interact with other users of the platform also allowing one who has a small business to sell their products in and from the TikTok store. TikTok is one of, if not the leader in viral videos, making it extremely popular on social media. According to the Influencer Marketing Hub editors and authors an article called, What Is TikTok? -Everything You Need to Know in 2024, the number of TikTok users reached almost 901 million in 2024 and is expected to go up to 955.3 million by 2025 (June 24, 2024).

Tik Tok App Usability, Functionality, and Design

When starting out as a new user, TikTok requires that you make a profile so that you can interact with other video content, such as expressing your feelings in the comment sections underneath the posted content. You will then upon creating your profile be brought to questions concerning your likes and dislikes, this part is frustrating, however it allows one to view content with similar hashtags or descriptions involved so that you are happy with your viewing experience. This system is incredibly intelligent, as the individual answers are used for algorithm purposes- to keep each user satisfied, as each user will see entirely different content and it is not solely or mostly based on likes or popularity of each video, therefore giving newer videos a chance to be viewed as well. Once your profile is made, TikTok brings you through a short and simple tutorial that explains how to use the application. The user interface or (UI) is unbelievably easy to use and the setup is equally simple. The UI was built for infinite scrolling, utilizing auto play content, which many times itself draws you in. The user interaction is friendly and makes you feel involved, even when just swiping up and down on the screen- this allows one to feel in complete control of their own content and experience. TikTok makes it exceptionally easy for a user to create their own short videos as well offering many simple templates and effects. A user can literally press the + button located in the bottom of their screen and start creating content. The live option is just as easy. TikTok also allows one to sell items from their personal business in their online TikTok store, which allows users to buy products and additionally with the Live viewing option, know the sellers as well. All together with the simple design, the incredibly easy UI, and simple intelligent, yet uncomplicated functionality TikTok is a great Application, but could change a few things to create a better result of human interaction and communication.

Improvement Recommendations (3):

#1. Underage Users:

Because TikTok remains popular with young children, it may shed light on their daily activities, which could cause some children to be in danger. Children do not always know what is appropriate to say or not say as well as what information they should give out. This poses a risk for the youth who could become victimized by a perpetrator.

#2. Hate and Bullying:

As a user on TikTok, I have seen some awful things said to other individuals. Bullying can lead one to extreme depression and even cause one to commit suicide. I think that there should be rules when you are on a platform with so many diverse subjects and cultures to help eliminate some of the hateful comments and speech.

#3. Censorship & Moderation:

TikTok allows content that should never be viewed by children to be seen because they lack censoring and moderation for the allowable content. This is just not appropriate for children of all ages as children know enough without the extra uncensored content that they are able to access through an app such as this.
