Documenting a Day- Role of Applications
In life, there are many actions that we do daily. When documenting these daily tasks to view an overall understanding of one's either daily, weekly, or monthly activities, it helps to have a proper knowledge of software applications, which can assist in the future, to get a precise overview and save much time in the process. The question here is which application helps the most with documenting daily activities, and why? This paper is meant to help answer this question and additionally, give insight into some well-known software applications for future reference. In this essay I will explain my personal experience with a few chosen applications and explain what their best uses are moving forward.
Explanation of Database and software applications
First, I will explain what a database application is in more technical terms. According to Vahid & Lysecky, authors of the textbook Computing technology for all, Microsoft Access is a database management system (DBMS) because it creates, maintains, and accesses database systems (2019). Additionally, author on Techwalla.com, Morris Wall adds that Microsoft Access is an example of an advanced database application, furthering the explanation (n.d.). With that said, Microsoft Access helps individuals to use software applications all in one place. Applications like Word, a word processing application, Excel, a spreadsheet program, and PowerPoint, a presentation software application on the go. These applications can be accessed in business offices, homes, or even classrooms to create documents needed for necessary tasks, easily and readily to use.
Comparison of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint & Best uses
After documenting my tasks for a 24-hour period, I first used the software program called Word. I changed many different font options, the text alignment, and I added two bulleted lists. The Word application is simple to use, and the functions are easy to manipulate and change in the application, however, it is useful for writing essays, journal entries, and with the copy edit feature, notes. The best use for the Word application is for either academic essays, business, or academic letters, and useful to create quick go to notes-especially with the spell check and grammar options. The second application I used is Excel, according to corsera.com, Excel is software that can be used to organize data for work or life (Coursera staff, 2023). Although Excel proved to be more difficult than the other applications offered by Microsoft and needs more experience with the software's familiarity and functionality. If you are an accountant or need a simple spreadsheet application, this application is perfect, but some knowledge is necessary to understand it better. If just documenting one 24-hour period of activities, it is not the best option. A better use of the Excel spreadsheet application would be to document finances going in and out of a household monthly because it does not change significantly from day to day and can be easily categorized. The last application I used was PowerPoint to create a presentation. This application is not only fun, but unbelievably simple to use and allows for one to view a preview of your slide before moving to the next, which is super convenient. The PowerPoint application works very well for documenting a 24-hour period. The insert option helps to create a visualization of your day, and additionally the text in the presentation helps to aid the visual aspect as they work hand in hand with one another to give a great feel of the experiences with your audience.
Conclusion
When asking a question such as which software application is best used to document a day in your life, the answer proves to be PowerPoint. Although Microsoft Word and Excel have their own great and significant uses, neither one document a day quite as well as a visual presentation done using PowerPoint.
